Rovers lose in added time

Saturday saw Rovers travel to promotion challengers Brentwood Town at the slightly earlier time of 2pm due to ongoing floodlight issues at the Brentwood Centre.

The opening 45 minutes had little to report. The only real chance fell to Rovers Billy Harris who saw his shot go well over the host’s goal.

The team talks from both managers must have done their job as both teams looked sharper and more determined in the second period. Brentwood saw chances for Tom Richardson and Ash Nzala crowded out by the much improved Rovers defence

As the clock ticked down Rovers were growing into the game more and more, new boy Alex Clark was pulling the strings going forward and was causing Brentwood big problems down the right hand side.

On 82 minutes Rovers probably had their best chance of the game when they were awarded a free kick about 35 yards out, free kick specialist Ben Brooks stepped up but saw his lovely effort on goal saved by Brentwood stopper Ollie bowels.

As we entered added on time it seemed a goalless draw was on the cards and to be honest both sides would have probably seen it as a fair result and taken a point a piece, however Brentwood had one more chance to settle themselves and push forward when they were awarded a free kick of their own on the left hand side, the ball was floated into the box and fell onto the right hand side were Andy freeman was there to meet it and fizzed the ball back into the danger area finding an unmarked Dan Ogunleye who knocked the ball in from close range, cue wild celebrations and heart break for Rovers.

Although disappointed with the result, Rovers gaffer John Coventry will be happy with how the team is improving game by game and will be confident he can lead them away from relegation danger.
