Canvey Island 2 Great Wakering Rovers 3

On Bank holiday Monday Rovers took a trip to the seaside to take on high flying Canvey Island.

The hosts started brightly and it looked like an easy days work was on the cards when Canvey took a 2-0 lead within the opening 40 minutes, Matthew Price slotting in the opener after some good work on the right hand side by Evans kouassi.

8 minutes later the lead was doubled when Odei Martin Sorondo unleashed his shot from the left hand side and saw it nestle in the bottom corner of the goal.

The visitor’s heads didn’t drop and they were back in the game before half time. Jermaine Anderson with a superb mazy run through the Canvey defence and calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner to grab his first goal for Rovers.

Wakering came out he blocks the quickest in the second half, Mavanga-Kithambo coming close to getting a debut goal but he saw his shot well saved at the second attempt by Bobby Mason.

The visitors hard work and determination was starting to show, and it paid off in the 64th minute when Tom Anderson broke into the Canvey penalty area and was dragged down, Martin Touhy stepped up to take the penalty against his old team mate ex Rovers keeper Bobby Mason and although Mason got close he couldn’t keep it out and Rovers were level.

The noise in the ground went up an extra level, and the Rovers faithful behind there opponents goal were in full voice sensing a remarkable comeback could be on, and there dreams were realised when Billy Johnson flicked the ball on to Anderson who beat the offside trap to smash the ball past the oncoming Mason to grab his second and Rovers third, cue wild celebrations behind the goal.

Canvey threw everything they had to try and level the scores and they nearly got there reward hitting the post late on. There were groans from the traveling Rovers fans when 5 minutes of added time was announced, however Rovers had not come this far to throw it away and held on for a famous victory and more importantly 3 massive points away from home.
