Rovers enjoy success in Suffolk

Great Wakering Rovers impressive start to the season continued in Suffolk as they recorded success in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup.
It was a tentative start what with neither side knowing too much about each other, Rovers Jimmy Webb had the first chance of the game, but his strike from the edge of the box was expertly turned aside by Glyn Dixon in the Town goal.
Minutes later Webb missed a glorious chance to give Great Wakering the lead, shooting wide after being sent clear by Ashley Hawkins. Meanwhile at the other end, quick thinking Louis Godwin-Green thwarted the on rushing Jordan Seaman by racing from his area to kick clear.
The teams continued to spar with each other. Town’s Paul Hart sent a chance high over the bar when he seemed certain to open the scoring and Webb once again tested Dixon in the Woodbridge goal with a long-range effort.
Great Wakering Rovers defender Jake Gibson was causing the home defence problems with his over lapping runs, and after 25 minutes, his inch perfect pass sent away Player-boss Dan Trenkel who fired the visitors ahead with an ice cool finish.
Soon after, the Rovers supporters amongst the crowd of 88 believed they had doubled their lead. Julian Simpson-Parson slotted home Webb’s inch perfect cross but was ruled to have been offside.
Woodbridge hit back when Paul Berry’s strike was turned away by Godwin-Green, then the Rovers custodian brilliantly turned over Ben Seaman’s thundering free-kick.
In the second period, Rovers started the brighter. Dixon redeemed himself by saving from Jay Nash, after Webb charged his poor clearance down. The Town keeper then denied Julian Simpson-Parson, and skipper Lewis Sparrow fired over from close range.
The home fans were shouting for a penalty when Aaron Churchyard went down after a challenge from Sparrow but referee Martyn Holmes waved away their protests.
The home side were enjoying their best spell of the game, Paul Hart sent a free-kick just wide of the Rovers goal, then Jordan Seaman missed a seemingly easy opportunity when one on one with Godwin-Green.
Soon after Godwin-Green had to be on his toes again, saving from Alicion Blake.
But Rovers were not to be denied a rare chance of an FA Cup victory. With just four minutes remaining, Ashley Hawkins beat the stranded Dixon with a brilliant 25-yard free kick.
There was still some nervy moments for Great Wakering. Firstly, Stuart Hepburn was given his marching orders for dissent, and then Kelsey Trotter thumped home a late goal to give Woodbridge hope.
Rovers now travel to Wroxham in the Preliminary round, coincidently the club who took their place in the Ryman League One North following last season’s relegation.
