Webb and Cox prove too good for visitors

Great Wakering Rovers continued to show impressive pre-season form with this entertaining victory over Eastern Counties Leaguers Stanway Rovers.
The home side started in a confident mood. After only four minutes, Jimmy Webb reacted quickly to some sloppy defending to fire Great Wakering ahead.
After nine minutes, Stanway hit back, but George Watts made a smart save to deny the visitor in what was their first really threat. In response, Perry Dunn headed Webb’s corner wide.
The home side continued to press. Jordon Cox met Joe Skeels cross, but the strikers’ header was cleared off the line. Then Skeels’ twenty-five yard shot just cleared the Stanway crossbar.
The visitor’s number nine was showing threat. Firstly he shot wide across Watts’ goal, but with his next chance he levelled the score with a well placed header.
Just before the break, Jimmy Webb extended the Stanway keeper following a penetrating run and shot from the right flank, then Mike Dean clipped the crossbar following a quick Great Wakering free kick.
A minute before half time Dean was not to be denied. Following good work by Jordan Cox, Dean ensured the home side went in with a half time lead, finishing with a crisp shot from twelve yards.
The second period began with Dean once again striking the frame of the visitor’s goal as Great Wakering looked to put the game to bed. However, it didn’t take them too much longer to find the third goal.
Jimmy Webb jinked in from the flank before dispatching a low shot past the Stanway custodian.
Stanway refused to buckle, within two minutes they had pulled the score back to 3-2, following up after an initial shot had hit the bar.
The goal festival continued soon after when Jimmy Webb restored Great Wakering’s two-goal advantage, and indeed completing his own hat trick, mainly thanks to a horror moment for the visitors goalkeeper who allowed his free-kick to squirm through his legs. Then skipper Lewis Sparrow followed in Jordan Cox effort to put the home side 5-2 ahead.
Stanway then pulled the score back to 5-3 courtesy of a penalty kick awarded by referee Steve Parmenter. Interestingly, Parmenter was the only person involved in the match who had been capped at international level, representing Wales at Under 21 level during his time as a player with Bristol Rovers!
Cox came close to adding a sixth goal when his spectacular strike cannoned back off the post, while Stanway had another goal chalked off by the assistant referee’s flag.
The full time whistle brought warm applause from the small crowd. Great Wakering player-manager Dan Trenkel was pleased with the workout and stated that his fringe players had really given him something to think about.
One thing is for sure. Rovers look fit and ready for the challenge that is ahead of them, it’s going to take a good team to deny them winning promotion back to the Ryman League at the first attempt.
