Ladies team manager discusses the season ahead and playing at Burroughs Park.....

It means we will be going into the season with some of the best facilities in women's football.
- Paul Smith - Rovers Ladies Manager

So it was only right that I speak to the manager of one of our new teams at Rovers this season, Paul Smith, manager of Rovers Ladies.

You've joined Rovers with a very successful womens team. What made you join Rovers?
Yes we have been very successful in the short time that we have been in ladies football.

We have been lucky enough to win 3 Championships in a row. This team has been going for 10 years now so a lot of hard work went in before we took the step to 'Adults' football, and that hard work continues as we rise up the women's pyramid.

With the latest promotion it meant we had to meet a certain ground criteria. We had been in talks with Rovers a couple of seasons ago but unfortunately it fell through. So when the chance came up again we were very pleased to get it all sorted this time around. It means we will be going into the season with some of the best facilities in women's football.

Do you feel the joining the Rovers was a natural step to also improving the ladies team going forward?
I think this is a massive step forward to improving the team. This now means we can offer facilities that no other local team can within ladies football. Playing at a senior ground with a club house and excellent changing facilities is a good pull on other players possibly looking to join.

As a player and you walk into Burroughs Park and it honestly gives you a feel good factor. As our home ground, this will go a long way to settling the team.

You've now got a home ground at Burroughs Park. Is there anything you'd like to say to the Rovers faithful where ladies football is concerned?
Having already been part of Rovers 1st team for the last 6 months as Adam Seals goalkeeping coach, I know what its like being around the club.

I would hope that some of the regular supporters would come and support us, even if it was for the big games like FA Cup etc. I noted that a few watched a game we played there last season and hopefully they were surprised at the standard of football we play and will return to watch us again.

Are you moving from your yellow kit to the green & white?
We will be changing everything over to play under the Rovers banner, badge, colours, name, everything. It will be a shock as the girls have always worn yellow and black but i know they are looking forward to wearing the green and white of Rovers

Do you feel you have the current squad to push for more success in the forthcoming season?....or perhaps a season of stability in Level 3 of Womens football?
Unfortunately we will be losing a couple of players as they are going to University, which is something we have had to deal with every season. But we adapt and have lots of very good players in this team. If we get off to a good start to the season then who knows what might happen, because we all know that confidence is a big part of football and good performances build confidence.

If we can bring a few new faces into the squad it will only strengthen the side, bring competition for places and spur on performances to cement places in starting lineups.

I am more than aware that this is the biggest step we have taken so far in our history, so we will do everything possible to prepare the players for the start of the season.

You're holding open trials in July. Is there anything you would like to say to anybody reading this that may be a little apprehensive about trialling for the team?
If anyone is considering the trials, I would say come over, have a look and see what we are about. The ladies are a very friendly bunch, very welcoming.

All the coaches hold FA Licences up to level 3 and have years of experience working within female football, as well as many years working at semi-pro level in the men's game.

You won't have better facilities anywhere in Essex for a ladies team, so come over and help us write the next successful chapter in our history and climb to the next level.

Looking ahead to the future, we'd like to build a reserve team as I believe if we are to progress further, we need to ensure we have players coming through to support the first team.
We are also hoping to start training for younger girls under the Rovers banner and this will see some of the existing players coaching them, thus we're aiming at putting something back into the local community.

All at Rovers would like to welcome the ladies team and we wish them the very best of luck for next season and for the future with the club.

The Future Is Bright, The Future Is Green & White!!
