I managed to catch up with Rovers manager Dan Trenkel and put some questions to him after a disappointing weekend.

We're 3 in 3 for the league. It must be the start you had wanted?

It’s great to start a season well but I’m not getting carried away at all. This is a long season, but to use the biggest cliché ever we are only taking 1 game at a time. I probably couldn't tell you who we have in 3-4 games time!
But, take the Hullbridge Sports match for instance. You can't tell before a game just how a team is going to perform, so to pick up the points yet underperform seems a stark contrast to last season when we would have most probably lost the game. Good sides pick up wins on their off days.

Is it frustrating for you not to have a midweek game?

You can look at that in both ways to be honest. After losing on Saturday it would’ve been nice to have a game straight away, but in another sense we do have things to work on and two sessions will allow us to do that.

Not much has been reported in the past about Enrico's addition to the management team. How has him joining impacted training and pre-match preparations?

Enrico’s domain is training, simple. That’s where he uses his knowledge and his integration into our management team has been seamless. His work with the shape of the team has been and will continue to be vital to us.

I know it's hard to read into the league table and results so far, but are there any teams based on results that have suprised you OR you believe will be up there towards the end of the season?

The sides I expected to be at the top are and will be, Enfield, Takeley, Tower Hamlets, Basildon, Haringey Borough and Barking. I think FC Romania have picked up some useful results so they are a bit of a surprise package and I think Clapton and Sporting Bengal will be a lot better than they were last season so its going to be very difficult for us.

As a follow on for the previous question, naturally you and I believe Rovers are good enough for top spot, but who do you predict will finish in the second automatic promotion place? (we'll revisit your predicition at the end of the season)

I'm not sure but I believe its only 1 spot to go up this year and if so we’ve got to work extremely hard. The 6 sides I mentioned above will all be involved and hopefully we can be somewhere in there.

Rovers are out of the FA Cup due to an unfortunate deflection. What were your feelings after all that hard work, seeing the ball roll into the net?

It was a choker and I really felt for our players. I didn’t realise how long was left to be honest, and when the ref said 4 minutes it was heartbreaking. We'd done enough to at least earn a draw and to have it snatched away from us by a deflection was rough justice indeed. If it had been a well worked goal, a piece of individual skill or a thunderbolt, then yes, I'd have accepted that.

What did you say to the players after the game?

I told them that they didn’t deserve to lose the game, but that it was a lesson learnt for us in as much as you can’t give teams a two goal head start.

Do you believe the result/performance will make the team stronger?

It’s got to. It truly was heartbreaking, not just for myself but for everyone, management, players & supporters. Defeats must spur you on to do better and I’m sure we’ll be fired up for our next match.

Our first trip to the Spotted Dog ground this Saturday. If previous seasons are to go by, will you adapt our play due to the pitch conditions?

Suprisingly their pitch doesn’t look too bad to be honest. We’re going there to play football. Some of our play on Saturday was a bit too direct at times but we’ll rectify that this week.

Finally, we're due to perform our own CrossBar Challenge in the coming weeks. Who do you think has it in them to hit that crossbar from the half way line?

Honestly? Not many! I’ve seen them trying it before. I think Sealsy has a chance and Pato definitely as he hits it like a rocket. Dave Collins has a decent chance - but out of everyone though I think mine will comfortably be the worst. I’ve tried it before and I think I reached the edge of the penalty area!
