Southend Echo sports journalist James Colasanti talks to Dan Trenkel

Southend United's young midfielder Jamie Stevenes returned to Great Wakering Rovers on loan this week. And Rovers boss Dan Trenkel said he was also hoping to bring striker Ashley Hawkins back to the club from Heybridge Swifts in time for the Boxing Day derby at Tilbury (note: this transfer is now confirmed).

On Stevens, Trenkel said: "When he was here earlier this season he was not really enjoying his football. But I have spoken to him and he wants to come and try and impress a few clubs with his performances for us, and that's fine by me."
"And if he leaves Southend at the end of the season then he will do his prospects no harm at all by having a good run in our side and performing as well as we know he can".

Trenkel said he was hoping to bring Hawkins in to bolster attacking options. He explained "Dan Williams has done well for us but I just feel we need another goal scoring threat. In my first two matches in charge here we have had two draws but we had chances in both to win in the last minute so it could have been six points.
And we know what Ash can do here so he will hopefully come in and give us more options".

Trenkel revealed he has been inundated with calls from other managers offering him players on loan, but that he now has in place the majority of the squad he feels can succeed in Ryman One North. But he is expecting a tough game on Monday against a Tilbury side who have surprised many this season by keeping up with the play-off pack.

Trenkel said "I think they have lost one out of 10 at home, and we have won one and lost nine away. So in betting terms they should start as favourites. But we've shown against a very good side in Harlow Town that we can be a match for any side in the division, and I will be going there confident of picking up a win".
