Rob Lilley talks to the Rovers Captain

You've been at the club a number of season's now but people don't seem to realise you are still in your mid 20's. Have you changed as a player over those years?
Yes I've changed as a player quite a lot. When I first came to the club I was in my late teens, like most, thought I was a great player and found my way into the referees book more often than not. I began playing as a centre midfielder for the reserves. I got asked to play centre half for a few games due to injuries and I seemed to click better in defence. After a few games at that position, I got a call up to the 1st team from Iain O'Connell and have played there ever since.
Over the seasons though, I've calmed down as a player and basically realised that I can't just go diving in as much as I used to.

This is your first full season as Club Captain. Have you enjoyed it?

Yes I have enjoyed it immensely. When trenks asked me to be Club Captain at the back end of last season I was over the moon and when he asked me to carry the duty on for this season, I accepted graciously. It is a great honour to be leading the boys out and represent Great Wakering Rovers as captain. Hopefully I can continue and be as good as our Captains in the past.

How has it differed being Club Captain than a normal club player?
Being Club Captain has changed my game quite a bit. Naturally there is the added responsibility, having to organise 10 players around me, but I also have to ensure my own game doesn't drop. I'll be the first to admit that my disciplinary record has been far better this season, apart from the red card at Takeley. We have had alot of players booked for desent this season so I have found myself trying to calm them down quite alot of the time!
Also when playing alongside Stuart Hepburn, he's young an enthusiastic so I'm constantly telling him to stay on his feet to prevent getting getting booked!
Overall I think I've matured as a player and the responsibility has definitely improved my game.

What is your relationship like with manager Dan Trenkel?
I've a good relationship with Dan yes. Ever since he came back to the club when Iain O'Connelll was in charge I have looked up to him as a player and taken on board what he has said. I stayed in contact with him when he left at the beginning of last season and when Rovers appointed him manager at the end of last season I knew they had made the right decision. His knowledge of non league football and the players around is better than anyone I know and he has brought some fantastic players to the club.

What would you say is your style of captaincy? Do you model your captaincy on anyone?
Now I'm captain I like to try and set an example on and off the pitch. I'm able to keep a cool head in the majority of situations but I'm only human and yes, sometimes I do shout and argue but thats the passion for the club, the match and my fellow team mates around me. We do have a lot of players in our team that like to shout at the ref when a decision doesnt go our way. But as Captain, the Referee naturally wants to talk to me to try and calm the players. A couple of season's ago I would have been just as bad, going on at the referee, but I'm a calmer player now so listen more to the referees.

What do you feel has been your best game for the club this season so far?
To be honest I can't really remember a game that stands out for me. Although, that said, I have scored a lot of goals this season for a defender. Two goals stand out, the first being in the first game of the season with a header from a corner and the second being the volley against London Bari.

What do you feel has been the team's best performance this season?
We have had a few good games this season, away at Takeley in the league when we won 3-0 was a good game as well as away to Barkingside when we won 5-0 on what was an awful pitch.

Who do you feel has been the most influential player at Rovers this season?
There has been a few influential players with us this season. I think we have greatly missed Ty in the middle of the park since he got injured. But for me Dave Collins has been very influential. When he plays he brings alot of experience as well as a lot of ability.

If you could have any non-league player at Rovers, who would it be and why?
If I'm honest, I don't think I would change our current squad. It's a task and a half for Trenks to keep all the players from this season together but ultimately if we can stick together, we'll be a stronger team next season. If we can keep everyone 100% fit I think we're a match for any ESL or Ryman North side.

What do you believe has been Rovers biggest downfall this season?
Inconsistency, pure and simple. We have lost or drawn games we should have easily won and this has cost us.
Being a big team in the ESL, teams do come to us and up their game but we are more than capable of dealing with teams. On some occasions we have struggled to finish teams off when we should have and we've only ourselves to blame for that. Ultimately there are probably half a dozen games this season that we should have grabbed three points in, but we either drew or lost and you can't do that and expect to finish top!

What are your thoughts on Enrico's appointment as coach until the end of the season?
I think it's a good decision. The little things that we wernt able to work on in training before will now be possible to work on with Enrico here.
