Trenkel and Cleaver earn a share of the spoils.....

Rovers manager Dan Trenkel said he felt we deserved nothing less than a draw after scoring two stoppage time goals to salvage a point at Witham Town.

Rovers had trailed 2-0 going into the closing stages of the encounter, but goals from Trenkel himself and new signing Jacob Cleaver after the clock had ticked past 90 minutes earned a draw in dramatic fashion.

Rovers opened the season with a 2-0 win against Soham Town Rangers and, having conceded a number of late goals in the opening months of last season, Trenkel says he was pleased in the manner his team battled back.

“The draw, while dramatic in the circumstances, was the least we deserved,” said the player-manager. “We had six or seven very good chances to put the game to bed and so when we were staring at a 2-0 defeat I thought we only had ourselves to blame. But then it shows the character in the squad to carry on pushing until the final whistle.

“It was great for Jacob to score as that will do his confidence the world of good. He was under a lot of pressure as he went through but produced a really calm and composed finish, which is why we signed him.”

Trenkel said he would be taking more of a backseat role on the pitch this campaign, as he leads the team from the sidelines, but his introduction was the catalyst for Tuesday night’s turnaround.

And he said he was pleased to have such an impact.

“The two centre-halves for Witham were not really being tested and so, at 2-0 down and with 20 minutes left, we decided that I would go on and we would basically play 4-2-4 to see if I could cause some unrest in their defence with my physical presence.

“Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t and on this occasion it did as we pinned them back and I was able to win quite a few flick ons. Getting a goal was nice as well, but it wouldn’t have counted for anything if we hadn’t got the second goal.

“Witham will get stronger and I think the comeback has given the boys the belief that we are still in games right to the end.”
