BOYLAN SCORES WINNER AS ROVERS BEAT FRENFORD

Steve Lovell29 Oct 2024 - 15:43

Rovers 1-0 Frenford

Callum Boylan's strike was enough as Great Wakering Rovers beat Frenford and won back to back league games.

Rovers came into the fixture with several changes. George Martin returned in goal, Harry Talbot was back from suspension and Ben Search returned on the bench following an ankle injury he had sustained. Rovers had won four of the last five league games and four in six in all competitions.

Frenford came into the fixture with one win in six but were never going to go down without a fight and would prove to be a tough nut to crack despite Rovers recently defeating them in the Essex Senior Cup several weeks earlier.

KICKOFF

Ten minutes inside the first half, Rovers were the first to test the stoic defence of Frenford. Good play out from Danny Cossington from the back played the ball out to the left to Bradley Bennett who played a through ball down the line to Raheem Gray who turned inside past Orlando Bethmann and charged toward the edge of the area and left the ball to Callum Boylan who saw his stinging shot well saved by Jimmy Parker. Ben Search delivered the resulting Corner but Parker did well to claim the ball.

Sadly there was hardly anything to report for the rest of the half as Rovers took their foot off the gas weren't at their best, and couldn't create any clear cut opportunities. Frenford did well to hold the home team thanks to the valiant performance of Henry Mabassa and Tom Troubridge who won every header and cleared every ball away from their area.

HALFTIME: Rovers 0-0 Frenford

Great Wakering Rovers returned in the second half in much better fashion. They started to play well with one-twos but just couldn't make a clear cut chance.

With an hour gone, Tommy Barton was cautioned as he delayed a free kick to Frenford. Ten minutes later, Harry Brown managed to dribble past Tom Troubridge on the left but he was pulled back and cautioned for the foul.

However, with fifteen minutes left to play, Rovers broke the deadlock. Alfie Whiteaker received the ball on the right wing and curled the ball to the edge of the six yard box to Bradleigh Rowland who misjudged his header and headed the ball back to Callum Boylan on the right. Somehow, Callum managed to dribble around the area and past five defenders before he spectacularly curled the ball past everyone and into the bottom left corner of the net which the 130 supporters erupted in celebrations.

Fifteen minutes later, Rovers had an excellent opportunity to double their lead. Ryan Bennett played the ball out to Dom Locke who managed to get around his defender on the left hand side of the byline and squared the ball across goal to Bradleigh Rowland who saw he close range chance glance over.

Rovers saw out the remaining minutes as they made it back-to-back wins in the league.

FULLTIME: Rovers 1-0 Frenford

That result means Great Wakering Rovers remain fourth in the league. They will now turn their attention to Tuesday as they take on Buckhurst Hill in the Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy and then back to league action on Saturday 2nd November as they travel to Barking to take on last season's FA Vase winners Romford in the Essex Senior League.
