BUCKHURST HILL 0-1 ROVERS

Rovers secured back to back midweek wins after Tony Martin headed in the only goal of the night to help keep their playoff chances alive.

Marcus Bowers side had come into this fixture after a string of inconsistent results, following the Rovers success of reaching the FA Vase final. They’ve played five, won three and lost two.

The Rovers also came into this fixture with a number of players missing due to injuries and work commitments. However, Marcus had to work with what he had.

Rovers started the game with a very high tempo, creating numerous opportunities but it was thanks to some brilliant goalkeeping from the Buckhurst keeper, Qamil Deruishaj who kept us at bay.

It was Buckhurst who had the first real opportunity of the game after half an hour. A ball was played over the top on the left hand side, which a winger ran onto, cut into the penalty area and forced Rovers keeper Luis Shamshoum into making a good two handed save to beat the ball away. Luis Shamshoum was called into action again a minute later when Rovers failed to clear the ball away and a Buckhurst player struck the ball straight at Shamshoum to beat away.

After Buckhurst Hill’s decent spell, Rovers turned up the gear and created a barrage of chances in the final five minutes of the half. Callum Bloss drove the ball forward through the centre of the midfield and passed the ball onto Jake Gordon on the right side of the penalty are and struck a brilliant shot which forced the keeper into a good outstretched save. Four minutes later, Callum Bloss again dribbled through the midfield effortlessly and played a great ball over the top for Max Gnandi to run on to and his shot went straight at the keeper and out for the corner which was dealt with.

Rovers went into halftime the better side.

HALFTIME: BUCKHURST 0-0 ROVERS

Rovers started the second half just how they finished the first half, and it took just five minutes for them to find that all important goal.

Jake Gordon delivered an in swinging corner towards the edge of the six yard box and an unmarked Tony Martin rose highest to head the ball down into the bottom right corner to score his sixth goal in eleven games since arriving in March.

Rovers had another chance twenty minutes later to double their lead, substitute Jack Stone combined with fellow Southend United loanee Beau MacDonald after some decent build up play which allowed MacDonald to get inside the penalty area and play a one-two with Jack Stone who’s shot was well saved from the Buckhurst keeper low to his left.

Buckhurst Hill then had the next opportunity after a short corner was taken which allowed their winger to strike a curling effort into the left side of the goal but the agile Luis Shamshoum who was in fine form once again parried his effort away.

Rovers substitute Danny Cossington then had the next chance fifteen minutes from time. Build up play on the right midfield managed to play Cossington into the opponents area to have him one on one with the keeper but his effort was well saved at the near post.

Rovers saw out the final fifteen minutes and seven minutes of nail biting injury time to secure back to back midweek wins.
